In less than ideal conditions, Ben Harwell kicked a 25 yard field goal with 38 seconds left to give Centennial a 52 – 49 win over the Denison Yellowjackets. With the win Centennial improves to (2-0) on the season, while Denison falls to (1-1).
After forcing a three and out on the first possession of the game, the Spartans scored on a touchdown pass from Kyle Burns to David Johnson to make it 7-0. On the ensuing possession, Matyrion Easley forced a fumble and Mykel Parker recovered to give the Spartans a short field. A few plays later, Centennial punched it in mid first quarter to make the score 14-0. Facing a third and long situation, the Yellowjackets converted and it would be a back and forth game for the next 36 minutes. 6 plays later the Yellowjackets crossed the goal line to make it a 14-7 ball game. The Spartans wasted no time scoring making the score 21-7. Three plays later David Johnson forced and recovered a fumble and the Spartans were back in business. Denison buckled down and forced a punt, and Hank Meyer pinned the Yellowjackets deep in their own territory. Denison moved the ball into Spartan territory, but David Johnson broke up a fourth down pass. After Spartans took over, they picked a few first downs but were forced to punt. Denison would take advantage. Putting together a 9 play drive that ended with a touchdown to make it 21-14. The Spartans had an answer. Christian Mosley would be the next to score for the Spartans and the lead was pushed to 28-14 with a few minutes until halftime. Denison would reach into their bag of tricks and score right before half on a trick play. Both teams would go in to the locker room with the score 28 – 21.
Denison would force Centennial to punt right after half and Hank Meyer converted a 4 and 8 for a first down. The Spartans wouldn’t capitalize on the conversion and punted away. Denison made quick work of their next offensive possession and scored in 6 plays. The lead was gone and it was now a tie ball game. CHS would take the ball and it was Mosley’s turn to take the spotlight. Mosley had a nice return on the kickoff, then on a long 3rd down situation, he caught a pass from Kyle Burns splitting defenders on the way for a 59 yard touchdown reception. The extra point made it 35 – 28. The defense held up the next possession, but a fumble gave the Yellowjackets the ball at the Spartan 2 yard line. One play later it was 35 – 35. The game would see each team score two more times a piece, setting up the Harwell field goal that would be the game winner.
