Spartans Survive Tigers Bite
– Nov. 19th
Spartans of Centennial took their TABC #15 Preseason Ranking and their #12 Hoop Insider Ranking on the road versus a young, tough, hungry and well coached, Mansfield High basketball team. The Spartans extends their record to 5-0 with the win tonight 74-57.
With a hot start Centennial looked like it would runaway early with the game as we went on a quick 8-0 run and extended it to 16-2 with just under 4-minutes left in the 1st quarter. Mansfield High made the necessary adjustments and slow the Spartan pressure and their 3-2 zone really gave Centennial problems as they climbed all the way back to end the quarter 15-16.
During the 2nd quarter, the game was very much serve and volley as the game went back and forth between the two teams as the Tigers took a quick 18-16 lead at the top of the quarter. Sparked by a pair of Keryn Collins (Missouri Southern Signee) two separate And-1’s the Spartans ended the half with a narrow 32-29 lead.
The Spartans are starting to get the reputation as a 2nd half team based on their previous 4-games, as the 3rd and 4th quarters have seen Centennial start to establish themselves defensively. Ignited by the sticky fingers and scoring prowess of SR – Tayton Conerway, the Spartans made a quick run that never saw the game get within 10-points again as the Spartans outscored the Tigers 42 to 28 in the 2nd half.
Centennial High School, moved their record to an undefeated 5-0 and were led by SR – Tayton Conerway (26-points, 8-steals, & 8-rebounds) , SR – Keryn Collins (21-points & 5-assists), and SR – Jacob Stuckey (10-points & 10-rebounds). Other contributors included JR – Jeb Tobin (4-points), SR – Zach Bolf (9-points), FR – Kendall Lawrence (2-points), and SR – Marek Kerr (2-points).
The Spartans next game is at home in Spartan Arena versus the Leadership Prep Academy from Frisco, TX. Friday, November 22nd, 2019 @ 7:30pm.
