The sub-varsity boys basketball squads traveled across town for a district showdown against rival Burleson High on Tuesday evening.
The freshman A team got off to a fast start Tuesday evening. Their active defense caused many turnovers for the Elks and were able to take a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spartan full court pressure continued throughout the game along with some effective outside shooting from Bailey Sosebee and Brayden Elrod. The Spartans finished out the game with 22 points in the final period of play to walk away with a 64-55 victory. Sosebee finished with a game high 26 points while Cedric Cotton tossed in 12 points and Elrod contributed with 11 points for the Spartans.
The Spartan JV squad got off to a sluggish start Tuesday evening. The Spartans struggled to score in the first period and trailed 20-7 going into the start of the second quarter. Marek Kerr and Keryn Collins sparked the offense in the second quarter and pulled the deficit to 7 going into the half. Both sides continued to trade baskets as the game opened up to a 10 point lead for the Elks going into the final period of play. Centennial’s hope for a comeback fell short in the final seconds of play with Burleson taking a 60-55 win. Keryn Collins lead all scorers with 28 points while Preston Tabor threw in 14 points with a strong second half performance.
Both sub-varsity teams will host Crowley on Friday evening. JV tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm and Freshman A will start at 6:30 pm.
