Spartans Rivalry Game on the Road
In tonights 5-5A District contest, the Centennial Spartans traveled to a raucous Burleson High School (Elk Arena) for the first of two rivalry games and come out with a win 75-66.
In a game that was intense from the tip and filled with emotion and nervousness, the game went back and forth and was very low scoring and even. At the end of one-quarter the game was knotted up at 13-13. As the second-quarter started the pressure of Centennial started to show signs of life and the Spartans went on a nice run to create some separation from the Elks of Burleson High School as they closed the half 37-26.
As the second half started the Spartans, plagued by poor shooting, allowed the Elks to climb back into the game with transition baskets and open threes. The Elks scored 23-points in the quarter to the Spartans mere 15. In the fourth, the Spartans responded with a 23-point quarter of its own and closing out the game 75-66 to notch it’s 16th win on the season matching their win total of last season.
The Spartans were led by the hot shooting of SR – Anthony Hunter who had a game high of 28-points on 10/18 shooting from the field. His activity on the glass and in passing lanes led to two monstrous dunks that fed the energy of his Spartan teammates.
Hunter was accompanied in the scorebook by JR’s – Tayton Conerway who tallied 19-points of his own and added 3-steals, which inched closer to the school single season record of 109. Conerway is now less than 25-steals away from owning the record with 10-Games left to play.
The other JR – Zachary Bolf was as his a beast on the glass and at the rim as he notched his 6th double-double of the season with 16-points and 15-rebounds. Bolf is the single game rebound record holder at Centennial High School with 20-rebounds versus Dallas Molina.
The Spartans take on the Eagles of Crowley High School – Friday, January 11th at 8:00p at Spartan Arena (Centennial High School). The Spartans will be celebrating and honoring its teachers that night.
